What do Turks think of Israel? New survey shows fear

Turkish President Erdogan, who assumed the mantle of his second job, namely  AK Party chairman addressed his parliamentary caucus on  Wednesday, once again dedicating a major portion of his speech  to the “existential Israeli threat” on Turkish territory.  There is not one shred of evidence that Israel is interested in broadening its war against Palestine, Iran and proxies to encompass Turkey. Countless Turkish military experts interviewed in main stream media deemed the claim preposterous.

In a closed session of the Turkish Grand Assembly on Tuesday, Defense and Interior Ministers presented intelligence to the parties on the Israeli threat. After the session, main opposition party CHP leader Mr Ozel told the press the a.m. ministers   didn’t disclose anything “that is new to us”, signaling his skepticism about the threat perception.

Then, why is Erdogan pushing this line? A new survey may shed some light on the puzzle:

According to the research conducted by Areda Survey research company with the participation of 1,100 people across Turkey on the morning of Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel, 89.4 percent of Turkish people think that Israel has its eyes on Turkish territory!

Israel’s ground operation against Lebanon after Palestine changed the dimension of the war in the Middle East. At the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu said to Iran, “If you shoot us, we will shoot you.” Israel’s arm can reach anywhere in Iran. “This also applies to the entire Middle East.”

Following his statements, Iran launched ballistic missile attacks on Israel and tensions in the region escalated further. Following all these developments, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, “The place that the Israeli administration, acting with the delusion of the promised land, will set its sights on after Palestine and Lebanon will be our homeland.” His words came to the fore again. So, what do Turkish people think about this issue?

According to the research conducted by Areda Survey research company with 1,100 people across Turkey on the morning of Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel, 89.4 percent of Turkish people think that Israel has its eyes on Turkish territory. 10.6 percent do not think they have such a situation.

In the research conducted by the research company in the past months, the same question was asked to Turkish people and this rate was recorded as 81.6 percent. This increase, reflected in the rates within a few months, also strengthens the perception that Israel is likely to attack Turkey.
