Erdoğan Criticizes Opposition Over Corruption Probe, Urges Judiciary Independence

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sharply criticized Turkey’s opposition over corruption and terrorism allegations against the Istanbul Municipality (İBB), calling on Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel to allow the judiciary to function without interference.
“Let the Courts Operate Freely”
Speaking at an iftar dinner in Istanbul, Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s adherence to the rule of law, stating:
"If you have courage, let democracy and law operate freely. Let the courts make their decisions without any pressure."
Accusations of Financial Misconduct
Erdoğan alleged that the CHP’s municipal administrations were deeply involved in corruption, with investigations uncovering:
-
Illicit financial transactions amounting to hundreds of billions of Turkish Liras
-
Fraudulent diplomas within municipal employment
-
Mismanagement of public funds
The president accused the opposition of attempting to deflect blame and incite unrest, claiming:
"They are trying to cover their crimes by hiding behind young people and pushing radical leftist organizations to the forefront."
Warning Against Public Unrest
Erdoğan cautioned against protests disrupting national stability, asserting that:
-
Street demonstrations will not influence judicial or political decisions
-
No individual or group is above the law
-
Authorities will not allow provocations to threaten Turkey’s unity
"The days of influencing justice and politics through street protests are over," Erdoğan declared.
