Trump’s Türkiye Ambassador Nominee Emphasizes Strategic Ties at Senate Hearing

TRUMP

Tom Barrack, U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Türkiye, highlighted Türkiye’s geostrategic and military importance during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Türkiye's Role in NATO and Regional Security

“Sitting at the most strategic crossroads of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, Türkiye's NATO contributions are numerous,” said Barrack, describing Türkiye as a crucial regional ally with one of NATO’s largest militaries and naval fleets.

He emphasized Türkiye’s cooperation in the fight against ISIS (Daesh) and its military strength as key assets within the alliance.

Support for Ukraine and Montreux Convention Cited

Barrack also noted Türkiye’s active regional diplomacy, pointing to its:

  • Drone support for Ukraine

  • Mediation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative

  • Control of the Istanbul and Çanakkale Straits under the Montreux Convention

He called Türkiye’s role in managing wartime access to key waterways “strategically vital” for NATO and European security.

Economic Goals and Energy Cooperation

Barrack voiced confidence in achieving the $100 billion U.S.-Türkiye trade target, a goal previously set by Presidents Trump and Erdoğan. He highlighted opportunities for deepening ties in energy cooperation, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG), positioning Türkiye as a counterweight to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Position on PKK and YPG in Syria

Responding to questions about U.S. policy in Syria, Barrack recognized the YPG (People’s Protection Units) as a component of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party)—a group designated as a terrorist organization by both the U.S. and Türkiye.

He acknowledged the YPG’s operational role against ISIS, but maintained that its PKK affiliation is a serious concern in bilateral relations.

The PKK has been responsible for more than 40,000 deaths in Türkiye over four decades, including women, children, and civilians. The YPG, also known as part of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), operates as its Syrian offshoot.

Pledge for Consultation on Syria Policy

Barrack admitted needing further insight into Türkiye’s expanding military presence in northern Syria, but promised to engage in close consultations with all regional stakeholders, should he be confirmed as ambassador.

Renewed Focus on Positive Bilateral Relations

Barrack’s testimony reflected a constructive approach to U.S.-Türkiye relations, contrasting with recent tensions between the NATO allies over defense, sanctions, and Middle East policies. His statements signal a potential reset in diplomatic tone and strategy.
