Historic Energy Cooperation Milestone
“We took a historic step in Türkiye-Turkmenistan energy cooperation,” Bayraktar stated on social media platform X, emphasizing the deal’s strategic importance.
The agreement, signed between Türkiye’s state-owned pipeline operator BOTAŞ and Turkmenistan’s Turkmengaz, sets March 1 as the targeted date for the commencement of gas flow.
This deal builds on a March 2024 memorandum of understanding, signed in the presence of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov, which aimed to expand hydrocarbon collaboration between the two nations.
Türkiye’s Expanding Gas Supply Network
Türkiye, which consumes over 50 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually, currently sources its supply through a mix of piped gas from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from various global suppliers.
“With this agreement, which has been in development for many years, we will enhance the strategic cooperation between our countries while bolstering Türkiye and the region’s natural gas supply security,” Bayraktar said in an official statement.
The minister previously noted that Türkiye could purchase up to 2 bcm of natural gas per year from Turkmenistan, with the supply expected to be transported via Iran’s existing natural gas infrastructure.
Unspecified Transit and Supply Details
While the agreement marks a critical development in Türkiye’s energy diversification strategy, specific details regarding the exact volume of gas to be supplied and the terms of transit through Iran remain undisclosed.
