The Republican People’s Party (CHP), Türkiye’s main opposition party, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts to combat terrorism while advocating for the inclusion of democratic principles in the process.
On January 7, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel met with representatives from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) at the parliament. The meeting was part of the DEM Party’s broader consultations with political parties.
“We have proposed the establishment of a parliamentary commission involving all political parties. This commission should aim to enhance our democratic standards,” Özel stated during an address to his parliamentary group.
He emphasized the importance of transparency and inclusivity, calling for the process to move beyond closed-door discussions. Özel advocated for involving academics, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure an honest and open approach.
“The steps taken must adhere to democratic and legal principles,” he said, cautioning against the process becoming a bargaining tool between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the DEM Party for constitutional amendments.
Özel also made it clear that the CHP would oppose any initiative serving narrow political interests. “Surely we won’t endorse any process designed for one person’s political career,” he said, in a pointed reference to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
