Polat Energy Signs Turkey’s Largest Battery Storage Deal with Rolls-Royce

Polat Energy, a leading renewable energy developer based in Istanbul, has secured Turkey’s largest battery energy storage system supply agreement with Rolls-Royce, the German power solutions company owned by British multinational Rolls-Royce Holdings. The deal involves a total 132 MWh of storage capacity, which will be integrated into Polat’s 118 MW Goktepe wind power plant, located in Yalova, northwestern Turkey. This installation will make it the largest battery energy storage system in Turkey once operational.

Polat Energy’s Expanding Portfolio

Polat Energy is a key player in Turkey’s renewable energy sector, holding around 6% of the country’s installed wind energy capacity, with a cumulative output of about 660 MW. The company also operates Turkey’s first and largest wind power plant, the 288 MW Soma wind facility. In 2024, Polat announced plans to retrofit a 4 MW/4 MWh battery energy storage system at Soma.

Recently, Polat entered a partnership with SolarToday and iNOVAT to install a 12.8 MW/15,176 MWh CATL energy storage unit at its 13 MW Aegean wind power plant in Izmir.

Rapid Battery Storage Deployment in Turkey

As Turkey expands its renewable energy capacity, particularly from wind and solar power, there is a significant push for battery energy storage systems to enhance grid stability. Turkey’s Energy Markets Regulatory Authority (EMRA) revealed in late 2023 that it had granted pre-licensing to 493 energy storage projects, totaling 25,630 MW of capacity.

In a 2023 report, the SHURA Energy Transition Center projected that installing 7.2 GW of battery storage by 2035 could reduce natural gas consumption by 11.7 TWh and prevent $369 million in imports, underscoring the economic and environmental benefits of energy storage solutions.
