Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom state Corporation, said that the Turkish authorities had made a “political decision” to build a second nuclear power plant (the first one is Akkuyu). According to the head of the state corporation, the decision to allocate the site was made by the President of Turkey.
“President Erdogan has publicly announced that a political decision has been made to transfer another site to us. We are currently in the process of studying the details. Most likely, it will be a site called Sinop — not on the Mediterranean, but on the Black Sea,” the head of the company said, speaking in the State Duma (quoted by TASS). He noted that Rosatom may also participate in the tender for the construction of a third nuclear power plant in Turkey.
Last autumn, Alexey Likhachev announced that Rosatom would direct the proceeds from the sale of energy in Turkey to the construction of a second nuclear power plant. The first power unit of the Akkuyu NPP, which was built by Rosatom, received a permit for commissioning in December last year. The power unit is expected to be operational in 2024.
A second station can be built near the city of Sinop. It is assumed that technically it will be equivalent to the Akkuyu NPP, that is, it will operate on four VVER-1200 power units of 1.2 GW each. Turkey has been discussing a second nuclear power plant at Sinop with Russia for several years. The site at Sinop has already been partially prepared for the construction of a nuclear facility.
