Turkey: Losing Her Religion

The re-conversion of Hagia Sophia from museum to mosque is a despicably populist act, which will deprive Turkey off the oral high ground it held in the Clash of Civilizations, stoking hatred of Moslems across the world. However unlike boisterous claims by Western media it neither signals the end of secular Turkey, or Erdogan’ rise to the position of unchecked master of the country. The reality is much different than appearances. More than 60% of Turkish people don’t care about the status of Hagia Sophia, while the video cites two influential polls on piety or religiousness in Turkey, which is declining significantly in every measurable aspect.   Erdogan’s act was aimed ta distracting people from the deep economic misery attested by a broad unemployment rate of 24% as of April-May,  and a mediocre pick up in consumer demand in May.  With Erdogan preoccupied by his Islamist fantasies, it is difficult to see the economy improving, or AK Party’s poll support rising.
