Hafize Gaye Erkan resigned, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said, “I wish success to the newly appointed Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey and his team in line with my proposal.”
Central Bank Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan announced her resignation.
In her resignation text, Erkan said, “As the public is aware, a major campaign of assassination of reputation has been organized against me recently. In order to protect my family and, moreover, my sinless child, who has not even turned one and a half years old yet, from being further affected by this process, I have asked our esteemed President to pardon me from my duty, which I have carried out with honor since the first day.”
A minute after Erkan’s resignation announcement, a statement by Minister Mehmet Şimşek was shared on the account of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. “Erkan’s decision is completely personal and at his own discretion,” Şimşek said in the statement, which bears his signature. Şimşek also said that he had recommended the new Central Bank Governor to President Erdoğan and added, “I wish success to the new Central Bank Governor and his team who will be appointed in line with my recommendation.”
Tonight, President Erdogan is expected to appoint the new Governer, one among the deputy governors.
