Turkish private schooling has been one of the areas most affected by the coronavirus.
Thousands of private schools in Turkey were closed during the pandemic. As some insolvent schools transferred their students to other secondary education entities, school buildings are sold to different sectors. At this point, the health sector, which has grown subsequently due to the pandemic, stands out as the biggest buyer.
Providing information about the crisis in private schools, Hakan Akdoğan, President of the All Entrepreneurial Real Estate Consultants Association (TÜGEM) said, “According to the Ministry of National Education data, 938 private schools were closed in 2020 and 2021 when the Covid-19 pandemic took place. Eight hundred and eighty-two private schools changed hands. 14.652 students from the closed private schools and 35,302 students from the transferred private schools switched to public schools.
Stating that the decrease in private schooling demand due to the pandemic has negatively affected the sector, Akdoğan said, “There are increases in the sales and rental supplies of private school buildings. Some just want to sell the building, while others want to hand it over with their students. Among these, some of the schools were built at very high costs: millions of Turkish liras. Among the schools sold, educational institutions with large campuses worth 100 million Turkish liras, and small kindergartens worth 500 thousand TL.
Expressing the school buildings are to be used for different purposes, Akdoğan said that the most interest is from the health sector. Akdoğan said, “The primary demand for these buildings is the health sector. Since the health sector has started to grow even more during the pandemic period, big brands that want to open new hospitals may want to buy. However, there are issues in the legislation of each sector. From the ceiling height to the door width, from the elevator features to the fire systems, not every building can be transformed for every job.
