Turkish President Mr Erdogan is creating trouble by loudly supporting HAMAS in its conflict with Israel. Contrary to what you might think, Gulf nations (ex-Qatar), Egypt and Jordan are not friendly with HAMAS. Thus, the question of WHY.
One may think it is only natural for Erdogan to run to the defense of HAMAS, because he is Islamist and hates the Judeo-Christian civilization. It may not be that simple. Hint: Turkey has municipal elections in March 2024, where HAMAS advocacy might be one of the campaign themes for Erdogan.
Of course, such support is not without consequences. Swedish accession to NATO might be delayed once again, while poor diplomatic relations with US and EU could derail Mehmet Simsek’s austerity program. HOW?
